Pastor Larry Davies and his wife, Sharon Davies

The Texas Gospel Music Excellence Awards are in their 24th year. Leading the charge for excellence in gospel music has been Pastor Larry Davies and First Lady Sharon Davies. Together with their team, they have created a powerful platform that gives independent artists recognition for excellence. This years event is scheduled for February 24 – 27, 2022

For 24 years, the Texas Gospel Music Excellence Awards (TGMEA), founded by Pastor Larry Davies has been one of the top gospel award shows in the country. It was his desire then, as it still is today, to reward independent artists for the excellence they have shown through their ministry.

Prior to starting TGMEA in 1998, Pastor Davies assisted with a similar event called the Texas Gospel Music Awards. It was very similar to the TGMA, however, with the hiring of a camera crew, and renting of an elaborate Downtown Houston hotel space, it required a much bigger operating budget. Unfortunately, after several attempts over a 3 year period of time, the Founder of the TGMA decided to end the ceremony. Pastor Davies sized up TGMA and made some changes. The result was a significant increase in attendance over the 2 day period.

Warner Music has partnered with text message marketing platform Community, marking Community’s first deal with a major music company. The partnership will see select Warner Music artists given the power to “personally text with fans” via a 10-digit Community number – about exclusive releases, ticket sales, merch, and more, “free”, according to a statement “of social algorithm interference, spam, and ads”.

Founded in 2019 by Matthew Peltier and Josh Rosenheck, Santa Monica, California headquartered Community is used by celebrities including Barack Obama and Ashton Kutcher, as well as a number of superstar artists. It counts 28 million members, with 6 billion messages having been sent through its platform. The company raised $40 million investment from Salesforce Ventures in April 2021, bringing its total amount raised since launching in July 2019, to nearly $90 million.

Community says that its average open rates are upwards of 95% within the first three minutes of receiving a text message with a 59% average click through rate. Scott Cherkin, SVP, Global Audience Strategy, WEA said: “Community’s model helps us cut through the noise and gives us an authentic, personal, and unique way to reach the superfans.

“The direct line helps our artists get to know their fans better and opens up opportunities for them to plug their priorities – whether it be merch, concert tickets, or a new single – knowing they have an engaged and eager audience on the receiving end. “Some artists are already promoting their numbers at shows to really great reception and we’re excited to offer Community to even more artists in the Warner Music family.”

David Ross, SVP, Growth, Partnerships and Revenue, Community, added: “Our partnership with Warner Music unlocks additional opportunities for artists to drive engaging conversations at scale with their fans. “Deeper connections with fans ultimately results in increased sales, greater content consumption, deeper artist affinity and additional opportunities for Warner Music’s roster and brands.”

In recent weeks Warner Music Group (WMG) and Twitch struck what the two companies call a “first-of-its-kind” partnership – marking the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform’s first partnership with a major record company.

Warner Music Group (WMG) and Twitch (a video live streaming service that focuses on video game live streaming, including broadcasts of esports competitions. In addition, it offers music broadcasts, creative content, and more recently, “in real life” streams. ) have struck what the two companies call a “first-of-its-kind” partnership – marking the Amazon-owned live-streaming platform’s first partnership with a major record company. The agreement with Warner Music Group’s recorded music business will see the launch of WMG artist channels featuring exclusive content and behind-the-scenes material. A standalone WMG music space featuring premium music-centric programming will also be created and promises to be “an up-to-the-minute exclusive experience”.

It will feature professionally produced original programming curated by digital media company IMGN (IMGN media is a leading media technology company that produces, programs, and curates social content for Gen Z audiences), which WMG acquired last year. According to a media statement, the move “empowers Warner Music’s talent to tap into Twitch’s unique creator-driven model, opening up additional income opportunities, as well as access to Twitch’s fan engagement tools to get to know their audiences better”.

TIKTOK has surpassed 1 billion global monthly active users. According to a blog post published on the company’s website, “more than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new”.

A billion people are now using TikTok around the world every month – around three times the global audience Spotify pulls in. And for the music industry, TikTok is expanding far beyond its core function as a repository for frivolous viral videos.

Some 70 acts were discovered on TikTok and consequently signed by major record companies last year, according to TikTok’s own stats. The platform’s higher-ups grew significantly in 2021.

TikTok’s increasing presence in the music industry has even revived industry trends long thought dead and buried. Remember when the global record industry blew up the concept of exclusive artist releases on individual streaming platforms? They’re now back, via a side door, on TikTok.

Many artists have premiered clips of much-anticipated new records on TikTok over the past year – days before these tracks land on music’s largest on-demand streaming services.

And then there’s the potential of live-streamed concerts. This is an obvious expansion play for TikTok – whose per-user watch-time is, according to market research, now rivalling YouTube‘s (and even surpassing it amongst some demographics). The commercial potential of such projects is vast.

In a move that won widespread applause, Sony Music announced that it was to disregard unrecouped balances for a swathe of heritage recording artists on its books. The move was launched via an initiative called “Artists Forward” which, according to the record company, focuses on “prioritizing transparency with creators in all aspects of their development”.

Now, the marquee policy from that initiative, The Legacy Unrecouped Balance Program, is being extended to songwriters, with Sony Music Publishing (SMP) revealing today that it will disregard unrecouped balances going forward for qualifying songwriters. The news was confirmed in a letter sent by Sony Music Publishing Chairman and CEO Jon Platt to the company’s songwriters on July 20th.

Jon Platt – Chairman/CEO Sony Music Publishing

What this means in practice is that if a songwriter last received an advance from SMP prior to 2000, and that advance is still unrecouped today, said writer will now start being paid money from streaming and other royalty sources, backdated to January 1 of this year.

Harry Connick Jr.

Harry Connick Jr. Releases New Gospel Album for Doubters & Christians Alike: “It’s for Every Level of Faith”. The album, entitled Alone With My Faith, is dear to the singer’s heart, since he wrote the songs, played every instrument, and sang every part. Connick Jr. claims his one-man-band production is not quite the gospel album he had originally planned on making. “I wouldn’t call this the gospel album I had thought about making only because it’s not a collection of spirituals that everyone knows.

It’s got some original songs and quite honestly, some of the songs deal with struggling with faith as much as having faith so when I was home, I found myself counting on my faith or questioning my faith. So I said, ‘I’m gonna write about it,’ the artist continued. “And so the album that I thought was going to be a Gospel album 5-10 years down the road turned out to be this album now because it was really helping me get through this time.”

Jonathan McReynolds sings “Grace”

Spotify has launched a new tool within its so-called “two-sided marketplace” strategy – and it’s got the music industry talking.

The streaming platform allows artists and record labels to flag tracks that are a particular priority for them via a ‘Discovery Mode’ feature… and that this flagging then influences the selection of songs that Spotify’s algorithm picks out for listeners. Labels can be able to exert this ‘Discovery Mode’ influence in two areas: Autoplay tracks, which play after a Spotify user has completed listening to an album and/or playlist based on their prior usage; and Spotify Radio, whereby the platform picks out a radio-esque selection of songs based on a track or artist chosen by the listener. In other words, when artists/labels opt in to use ‘Discovery Mode’ to identify a track that they’d like to be prioritized in personalized listening sessions (in Radio and Autoplay), they agree to get paid a lower recording royalty rate for streams within those personalized listening sessions.
