In 2012, Adrian J. Wells recorded his first album SET ASIDE,

AJ Wells

with Endless Worship of San Diego.  During that time, he was appointed the first African American Director of Worship and Arts for the California Southern Baptist Convention.   AJ has also become a sought-after background vocalist for many Christian and mainstream artists and has lead music ministries in Nashville, Dallas, and Memphis.

AJ is an anointed creative and songwriter and has written an all-new project and independently released the first single called “King”.  The spirited praise anthem was recorded live and features vocalist Shauna Hughes.

King came from a moment of devotion and perplexity,” AJ states.  “I began to wonder where the majestic and big sounds of Gospel and soul music went.  Artistry felt common, and songs sung in our churches felt simple.  I felt compelled to write the super attributes of God and hail him as KING.”

Connie Denell Cato-Dickerson

Legendary Stellar Award and NAACP Award-winning radio announcer Connie Denell Cato-Dickerson was the pride of Nashville.

The daughter of radio legend Evelyn Cato, the first black female disc-jockey in the Southeast, Denell started as a sports reporter for her school newspaper while attending Riverside High School in Chattanooga, TN. She worked for two local Chattanooga radio stations, WNOO AM and WNTP, hosting the Quiet Storm shows before attending the famed Morris-Brown College, a historically black college in Atlanta, GA. Denell went on to attend Georgia State University and worked at the local Atlanta radio station WAOK FM on the campus of Clark-Atlanta University.

In the early 80s, Denell married and relocated to Music City, Nashville, TN, where her career took off. She worked briefly at WLAC radio doing the news. Later, she joined the Nashville-based television network TNN and became the first black talent coordinator to book country music artists on nationally televised Music City Tonight, hosted by legendary country music artist Ralph Emery. Denell went on to work with the Charlie Chase and Lorraine Crook Show, as well as with Dick Clark Productions and Rac Clark on the popular show, Prime Time Country, hosted by Gary Chapman.

In 1983, Denell worked as the Morning Show Host for 92.1 WQQK FM and news reporter for WVOL AM in Nashville.  By 2000, she made the shift from R&B to Gospel, launching 92Q’s hugely popular radio show, Gospel Inspirations, which aired Sunday mornings and earned her the beloved title of “The Gospel Diva.” Gospel Inspirations quickly became one of the most listened to radio shows in the Music City, thereby accrediting her with laying the blueprint for Black Gospel in Nashville. She retired from 92Q in December 2017, after 37 years with the company.

Kenny Smoov, Vice-President of Urban Formats and Classic Hip Hop for Cumulus Media, reflects on Denell’s impact on the community. “Connie Denell retired from 92Q in 2017, but her impact on our 92Q family will last a lifetime. She is one of the architects of Gospel music for the entire region and she had a ‘Heart of Gold’ to go with that.”

Her love and passion for Gospel music led her to audiences once more. In late 2017, Denell joined the legendary Dr. Bobby Jones as a co-host on Dr. Bobby Jones Presents television show currently airing on the Impact Television Network.

“Losing Connie has certainly been an uncomfortable situation for me,” says Dr. Bobby Jones. “However, to know that I was able to play a part in her life makes me smile. I am blessed to know that I was able to give something to another soldier that has gone home to be with the Lord.”

Connie Denell Cato and Bobby Jones

Her request to Dr. Jones was to be on television, and he obliged by sharing his platform with her as a co-host. Dr. Jones says Denell was delighted to be a part of the show.

Connie Denell Cato, 65, passed away Tuesday, August 24th, after a series of surgeries and medical complications. She is survived by her son, Stephen Keith Dickerson.

Village Lights

The multi-cultural worship collective, Village Lights, has recently released a new song, Here Is Our Hallelujah, from their upcoming debut album.

Village Lights is comprised of Sarah Kroger, Ike Ndolo and Ricky Vazquez and are based out of Nashville and Arizona. The song is a worshipful symphony growing from beautiful simplicity to a full-fledged anthem including choirs and a communal pattern of echoing the praises being sung. The central message displayed in the song’s title truly reflects a collective “hallelujah”, meaning “praise the Lord.” “Music is always best when made in a community,” shares multiple GRAMMY-nominated worship leader Matt Maher, producer for the Village Lights’ album and mentor to the group. Earlier this year, the band released their debut self-titled EP, which introduced their heartbeat; one of unity, inclusivity and reconciliation wrapped in worshipful devotion. Seeing themselves as more than a band, but rather a movement for those who seek justice in our world and Church.

In a move that won widespread applause, Sony Music announced that it was to disregard unrecouped balances for a swathe of heritage recording artists on its books. The move was launched via an initiative called “Artists Forward” which, according to the record company, focuses on “prioritizing transparency with creators in all aspects of their development”.

Now, the marquee policy from that initiative, The Legacy Unrecouped Balance Program, is being extended to songwriters, with Sony Music Publishing (SMP) revealing today that it will disregard unrecouped balances going forward for qualifying songwriters. The news was confirmed in a letter sent by Sony Music Publishing Chairman and CEO Jon Platt to the company’s songwriters on July 20th.

Jon Platt – Chairman/CEO Sony Music Publishing

What this means in practice is that if a songwriter last received an advance from SMP prior to 2000, and that advance is still unrecouped today, said writer will now start being paid money from streaming and other royalty sources, backdated to January 1 of this year.

The prolific teacher and Atlanta-based Senior Pastor deliver “Your Presence Is A Gift” digitally on all streaming platforms.

The beautiful ballad will precede a full album due later this year. Speaking to the goodness of always having God in our life Your Presence Is A Gift” showcases Smith’s deep, resonant vocals and establishes him as a bonafide contemporary Gospel artist.

“During a major time of grief, bereavement & loss, I had to rely on God’s presence totally,” said Smith. “I have always preached about it … multiple deaths made me now live it! Now I understand that even when we have to deal with the absence of those closest to us God’s presence is a gift.”

Desmond Pringle

Desmond Pringle’s golden tenor can be heard on some of the finest recordings in recent times. Over the years, he’s shadowed Aretha Franklin, Marvin Sapp and Yolanda Adams on CD, and led “The Place” on Shekinah Glory Ministry’s RIAA certified gold CD, “Live.” He’s composed hits for others and also enjoyed hits of his own ranging from the worship ballad “You Are God” to the inspiring Adult R&B hit, “Arms Wide Open.” and let’s not forget “You Are Good”. Now, after a six-year recording hiatus, Pringle is back on the scene with the mid-tempo, “Still the Blood.” The soul-stirring “Still The Blood” is a fresh addition to the current praise and worship music trend. “Usually songs come to me with lyrics and melodies as if someone is singing on the inside of me,” Pringle says when asked how the song was conceived.

Jason Nelson

Jason Nelson, best known for his No. 1 gospel ballads “Shifting the Atmosphere” and “Forever,” is showcasing another dimension to his immense talent on the smooth, mid-tempo track, “Residue” (Tyscot / FairTrade).

Dueling guitars – including Nelson on Bass – open this R&B-flavored groove about a bright future with no residue of a dark past. “The blind mark on my soul has been erased,” Nelson testifies. The warm track shows the Baltimore, MD native’s seemingly effortless and soulfully measured tenor that is on par with that of Charlie Wilson or Luther Vandross.

“Residue” is Nelson’s first release in three years and he’s planning to release a full album later in the year. “The new album will definitely be a departure from what I’m known for,” Nelson confides. “First, it’s a studio record [He usually does live albums]. Secondly, the record will dig into who I am artistically and musically.  We will delve into music that helped to nurture my sound as a singer. It pays homage to Dawkins and Dawkins, Commissioned, and Fred Hammond. All of them played a major role in my musical journey.”

Harry Connick Jr.

Harry Connick Jr. Releases New Gospel Album for Doubters & Christians Alike: “It’s for Every Level of Faith”. The album, entitled Alone With My Faith, is dear to the singer’s heart, since he wrote the songs, played every instrument, and sang every part. Connick Jr. claims his one-man-band production is not quite the gospel album he had originally planned on making. “I wouldn’t call this the gospel album I had thought about making only because it’s not a collection of spirituals that everyone knows.

It’s got some original songs and quite honestly, some of the songs deal with struggling with faith as much as having faith so when I was home, I found myself counting on my faith or questioning my faith. So I said, ‘I’m gonna write about it,’ the artist continued. “And so the album that I thought was going to be a Gospel album 5-10 years down the road turned out to be this album now because it was really helping me get through this time.”

Spotify’s latest invention monitors your speech, determines your emotional state… and suggests music based on it. For those who remember, in October Spotify was granted a patent for personality tracking technology. The filing explained that behavioural variables, such as a user’s mood, their favorite genre of music, or their demographic could all prospectively “correspond to different personality traits of a user”.

Now, according to details published in a new US Spotify patent, the company wants to use technology to get even deeper into its users’ heads, by using speech recognition to determine their “emotional state, gender, age, or accent” – attributes that can then be used to recommend content…

Spotify has launched a new tool within its so-called “two-sided marketplace” strategy – and it’s got the music industry talking.

The streaming platform allows artists and record labels to flag tracks that are a particular priority for them via a ‘Discovery Mode’ feature… and that this flagging then influences the selection of songs that Spotify’s algorithm picks out for listeners. Labels can be able to exert this ‘Discovery Mode’ influence in two areas: Autoplay tracks, which play after a Spotify user has completed listening to an album and/or playlist based on their prior usage; and Spotify Radio, whereby the platform picks out a radio-esque selection of songs based on a track or artist chosen by the listener. In other words, when artists/labels opt in to use ‘Discovery Mode’ to identify a track that they’d like to be prioritized in personalized listening sessions (in Radio and Autoplay), they agree to get paid a lower recording royalty rate for streams within those personalized listening sessions.
